Here’s some advice: if you’re going to use a credit card, use one that gives you something in return. The best optoin is a rewards credit card. This allows you to earn points for every dollar you spend. You can then redeem them for cash back, travel, gift cards, and more.

As you begin your search for a rewards credit card, you’ll soon realize that there are hundreds of offers. Your goal is to narrow your options. Shoot for three to five offers that pique your interest. From there, answer these questions to help make a final decision.

1. What’s most important to you in a rewards program?

This varies from one person to the next, so be sure to follow your gut when making a final decision. A short list of top features and benefits can go a long way in helping you narrow your options.

2. Have you compared rewards programs?

Take the time to compare at least three rewards programs. You’ll see the good and the not so good. You can then compare them across the board to make an informed decision.

3. How do you plan to use the reward points that you earn?

This goes along with comparing rewards programs. You’ll see the many ways that you can use the points that you earn. Are you interested in travel? Cash back? Gift cards? Make sure that you’ll have access to the types of rewards that interest you.

4. Have you read online reviews of the offers you’re considering?

This is an easy one. Take a couple of hours to read as many reviews as you can find. Look for common trends, both the good and the bad.

5. Are you okay with paying an annual fee?

Most rewards credit cards have an annual fee. These generally range from approximately $100 to $500 or more. Are you okay with paying an annual fee to gain access to a top notch rewards program?

Note: while most rewards cards have an annual fee, not all of them do. If you’re against paying this, narrow your search to offers that don’t have a fee attached to them.

Final thoughts

As you answer these questions, it’ll become more clear as to which rewards credit card best suits your financial situation. You can then apply online, wait for an approval (hopefully), and begin using it.

What’s your favorite rewards credit card? Why do you consider it the best of the best?
