Credit Card

The new year is in full swing and you’re doing your best to get a grip on your finances. While there’s a lot to think about, it’s important to turn some of your attention to your credit card and whether or not now’s the time for a change.

Before we discuss what to look for in a credit card in 2020, let’s examine some of the questions you can answer to better understand if now’s the time for a change:

  • Are you comfortable using your credit card for most purchases?
  • How do you feel about the safety features and security provided by your credit card?
  • What are your thoughts on your interest rate?
  • What do you get in return for the money you spend on your credit card?
  • Do you have an annual fee, and are you okay paying it?

As you answer these questions, you can formulate a stronger opinion on your credit card. This allows you to decide if a change to a new card would be in your best interest.

If you’re ready to make a move, here are some of the things to look for in a new credit card:

  • A competitive interest rate: Even if you’re not the type of consumer who typically carries a balance, you should still seek out a card with a competitive rate. This allows you to keep interest charges to a minimum should you need to carry a balance one month.
  • A robust rewards program: If you’re going to spend money – and there’s no way around it – you might as well get as much in return as you can. This is why choosing a credit card with a robust rewards program makes sense. For example, you can receive cash back or earn points you can redeem for travel and other items.
  • Great customer service: Have you ever had a poor customer service experience with your credit card company? How did it make you feel? Did it kill your confidence that they’ll always do the right thing? There is no replacement for great customer service. A company either has it or they don’t. And if your credit card issuer falls short in this regard, you’ll want to consider a change.
  • Low or no annual fee: This isn’t always possible, especially if you’re interested in an exclusive credit card offer, but it’s worth looking into. Annual fees typically range from $50 to $500, so keep this in mind when comparing credit card offers.

What you look for in a credit card may not be the same as the next person, so the above should only act as a basic guide. When it comes time to make a decision, it’s critical that you do so based on your personal wants and needs, as well as your financial circumstances and goals.

Once you choose the right credit card, you’ll feel better about using it regularly and taking advantage of all the benefits it offers.
